Ingredients
Below are notes about some of the ingredients.
- Butter: Use room temperature butter. I prefer unsalted butter, but salted butter works too.
- Granulated Sugar: This is an edible cookie dough recipe without brown sugar. It is made with granulated sugar.
- Milk: Milk gives this cookie dough its creamy texture.
- Flour: I recommend all-purpose flour. The flour is heat treated to kill any possible bacteria in the flour. Heat treating can be done in the microwave or oven. See instructions in the recipe card.
- Salt: A pinch of salt brings out the flavor and balance out a little of the sweetness.
See recipe card below for full list of ingredients.
Substitutions & Variations
- Sprinkles are optional, but recommended. They add pops of color and fun! Use rainbow, Christmas, or any type of sprinkles you like!
- For an extra decadent treat, use heavy cream in place of milk.
- Salted butter can be used in place of unsalted butter. If you use salted butter, you most won’t need to add any salt.
- Although not traditional in sugar cookies, M&Ms are a fun add-in to this cookie dough!
Instructions
Step 1: Heat treat the flour. Heat treating the flour is a precautionary step to kill off any existing bacteria. This step is optional but recommended.
Spread the flour on a large parchment paper lined baking sheet and put it in a 350 F oven for 5 minutes. You can also microwave the flour in a bowl in the microwave for 90 seconds.
Step 2: Cream the butter and sugar. In a large mixing bowl, use an electric mixer to cream the butter and sugar.
Step 3: Add dry ingredients. Add the flour and salt and beat until incorporated.
Step 4: Add milk or cream. Add the milk or cream 1 tablespoon at a time until you get the desired consistency.
Step 5: Add sprinkles and/or chocolate chips. Stir in any add ins you like!
Step 6: Enjoy! Enjoy this edible cookie dough out of the mixing bowl, in individual bowls, or scooped into balls.
