    Why We Love This Recipe

    • Chocolate Oreo donuts are made with both crushed Oreos and cocoa powder! Oreo fans will love them as much as our chocolate Oreo tart and Oreo peanut butter cheesecake recipe!
    • The cream cheese icing and crushed Oreos gives these donuts an irresistible cookies and cream taste!
    • You only need ten minutes or less to bake them just like these orange donuts.
    • They’re baked, not fried.

    Ingredients

Here are some useful notes on the ingredients for these Oreo donuts recipe.

    • Flour: Use all purpose flour.
    • Cocoa powder: Unsweetened natural, Dutch processed or black cocoa powder can be used. For more cocoa based desserts, try my chocolate focaccia bread and chocolate smores cookie recipe.
    • Brown sugar: Light or dark brown sugar. I prefer dark brown sugar because it has a deeper flavor. I also prefer dark brown sugar in this yummy peanut butter doughnuts recipe.
    • Butter: Use melted unsalted butter.
    • 1 eggs: You’ll need 1 large, room temperature egg.
    • Sour cream and milk: Full fat, room temperature sour cream and whole milk
    • Oreos: We’re using regular Oreos in the donuts and as decoration. You can also use Oreos to make my no bake chocolate mousse bars and mini chocolate pie recipe!

See recipe card below for a full list of ingredients and measurements.

    Substitutions & Variations

    • You can swap in salted butter or vegetable oil in place of unsalted butter.
    • Instead of sour cream, use whole milk, buttermilk, or Greek yogurt.

Wet ingredients and a whisk in a glass bowl.

Step 1: (Photo 1 above) Whisk together the egg, vanilla, sour cream, milk and melted butter.

Step 2: (Photo 2 above) In a large bowl, whisk to combine the flour, sugars, cocoa powder, baking powder, crushed Oreos and salt.Stir the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients.

Step 3: (Photo 3 above)Pipe the batter into the donut pans between 3/4 full and full.

Step 4: (Photo 4 above)Bake at 375 F for 8-9 minutes. Cool 5-10 minutes in pans then turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely.

Step 7: (Photo 7 above) Beat the cream cheese and butter until smooth. Add the vanilla, salt and powdered sugar. Top the donuts with cream cheese icing.

Step 8: (Photo 8 above) Pour Oreo crumbs into a shallow dish.Dunk donuts in the cream cheese icing. Next, place donuts then press the donuts into the crumbs or sprinkle crumbs or chopped Oreos on top.

    Expert Tips

Reusing a donut pan. If you only have one donut pan, allow it to cool for a few minutes before making the second batch. Grease it again after using it.

Use a food processor to crush the Oreos or place the Oreos in a large Ziplock bag. Use a rolling pin to crush the Oreos.

The easiest way to fill the donut pan is to use a piping bag or large Ziplock bag. Spoon the batter into the bag and snip off a corner.

Place a baking sheet lined with parchment paper under the rack to catch any drips after decorating.

    Recipe FAQS

What’s the difference between fried donuts and baked donuts?

Fried donuts are fried in a pan filled with hot oil. The oil fries the donuts. Baked donuts are baked in a donut tin in the oven.

Can I make baked donuts without a donut pan?

I don’t recommend making these donuts without a donut pan. Donut pans give your batter a donut shape. I use these nonstick Wilton pans for baking donuts.
I have two donut pans. Each pan makes 6 donuts. It’s easier to bake the donuts all at once using two pans.

How do I store leftover donuts?

Donuts are freshest and most flavorful the day they’re made. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

    • ¼ cup (59.15 ml) whole milk room temperature
    • ⅓ cup (76.67 g) sour cream room temperature
    • 1 (1) large egg room temperature

    Cream Cheese Icing

    • 4 ounces (113.4 g) cream cheese full fat, room temperature
    • 4 tablespoons (56 g) unsalted butter room temperature
    • 2 cups (240 g) powdered sugar
    • ¾ teaspoon (0.75 teaspoon) vanilla extract
    • 2-4 teaspoons (2 teaspoons) whole milk or heavy cream
    • pinch (pinch) salt optional

    For Topping

    • 4 (48 g) Oreos finely crushed or roughly chopped

    Instructions

    Oreo Donuts

    • Preheat the oven to 375 F and grease donut pans well with butter or nonstick cooking spray that contains flour.
    • In a large bowl, whisk to combine the flour, sugars, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
    • In a medium sized bowl, whisk together the egg, vanilla, sour cream, milk and melted butter.
    • Stir the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients until just combined. Avoid overmixing. Stir in the crushed Oreo crumbs.
    • Use a piping bag or zip lock bag or spoon to fill the dough into the donut molds ¾ full.
    • Bake 8-9 minutes. Place donut pans on a wire rack to cool for five minutes. Turn donuts out onto rack and allow to cool.

    Cream Cheese Icing

    • In a large mixing bowl, beat the room temperature cream cheese and butter on medium speed until combined and smooth. Add the vanilla and salt.
    • Add the powdered sugar followed by 1/2 teaspoon of milk at a time. Add more if needed until icing is the consistency you like.
    • Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Set a rack over the parchment paper. The parchment paper will catch any drips from the icing or cookies.
    • Dip the tops of the donuts in the icing. Next, press the tops in the Oreo crumbs or crushed Oreos to coat. Alternatively, you can sprinkle the crumbs or crushed Oreos on top of the donuts. Set donuts on a rack.

    Notes

Donut pans: I have two donut pans so I can bake the entire batch at the same time.  If you only have one donut pan, allow it to cool for a few minutes before making the second batch. Grease it again after using it.
Crushing Oreos: Use a food processor to crush the Oreos or place the Oreos in a large Ziplock bag. Use a rolling pin to crush the Oreos.
Filling donut pan: The easiest way to fill the donut pan is to use a piping bag or large Ziplock bag. Spoon the batter into the bag and snip off a corner.
Storage: Donuts are freshest and most flavorful the day they’re made. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
