Matcha affogato is matcha poured over vanilla ice cream. Hot, bitter matcha in contrast with cold, sweet ice cream is incredibly delicious! It’s a simple but impressive dessert recipe made with only 3 ingredients in just 5 minutes.

Matcha affogato is made with matcha tea poured over vanilla ice cream. The contrast of hot, earthy matcha with cold, sweet ice cream will make you enjoy every single spoonful!

Affogato is an Italian dessert traditionally made with espresso and ice cream. Instead of espresso, we’re using matcha! It’s basically a matcha float!

Matcha fans will also love my matcha sugar cookies and this fudgy matcha brownies recipe!

    Why We Love This Recipe

    • Affogato matcha is like having enjoying a cup of matcha green tea and a bowl of ice cream at the same time!
    • You only need 3 ingredients: matcha, water, and ice cream! For another easy frozen treat, try my peanut butter jelly ice cream!
    • The contrast in flavors and temperatures makes this a showstopper of a dessert just like my recipe for croissant with ice cream.
    • It’s a super fun and impressive after dinner treat just like this berry mascarpone ice cream.

    Ingredients

Labeled ingredients needed to make matcha affogato laid out on a table.

Below are useful notes on ingredients for matcha green tea affogato!

    • Water
    • Matcha powder: Matcha is powdered green tea powder. It gives this matcha brownie recipe its vibrant green color. It has a very unique, earthy flavor and tastes so good with the chocolate chips. I recommend using the best quality matcha you can afford. I use this culinary grade matcha powder. Make sure to use some of your matcha to make my matcha cake recipe!
    • Ice cream: Use any flavor. I prefer vanilla for this recipe.
    • Berries (optional): Add fresh or roasted blueberries, raspberries or strawberries.

See recipe card below for a full list of ingredients and measurements.

    Variations & Substitutions

    • Swap in green tea ice cream, chocolate ice cream or homemade strawberry ice cream instead of vanilla.
    • Top with shaved white chocolate, dark, or semisweet chocolate. Use a vegetable peeler and shave the side of a good bar of chocolate.
    • Sprinkle a little extra matcha powder on top!
    • Add some chopped pistachios, walnuts or hazelnuts!

    Instructions

Matcha powder in a white bowl next to a kitchen towel.
A white bowl with matcha being stirred together with a traditional matcha whisk.

Step 1: (Picture 1 above)Add the matcha powder to a small bowl.

Step 2: (Picture 2 above)Add a few tablespoons of hot water. Whisk til a paste forms. Gradually whisk in the rest of the water til smooth and combined.

A glass of ice cream, a cup with matcha tea and a kitchen towel.
A glass with ice cream and matcha with a spoon in it and a dish with matcha powder.

Step 3: (Picture 3 above) Scoop ice cream into a bowl.

Step 4: (Picture 4 above) Pour the hot matcha over the ice cream.

    Expert Tips

    • Sift your matcha powder before using. This will remove any clumps. It’s easier to do this before whisking in the water.
    • Make the matcha when you’re ready to serve/enjoy the affogato. Do not make the matcha too early or it will get cold.
    • Use a shallow bowl or a glass. Try not to use a glass that’s too tall so that it’s easy to dig into.
    • Use two meidum to large scoops of ice cream for each serving.
    • Matcha affogatos make a delicious dessert for guests! I recommend letting your guests pour their matcha over their ice cream! It’s really fun and they can dig in immediately after pouring.

    Recipe FAQs

    What is matcha?

Matcha is a powder made from ground green tea leaves.

    What does matcha taste like?

Matcha is rich, complex and somewhat bitter. I love it because it has such a distinct, earthy taste.

Where can I buy matcha powder?

You can buy matcha powder online.

    How do I store leftovers?

Matcha affogatos are so yummy you probably won’t have leftovers! I don’t recommend storing leftover affogatos. They are best when they are freshly made.

    Equipment

    • Culinary Grade Matcha Powder

    Ingredients

    • ¾ teaspoons (3 g) matcha powder
    • ¼ cup (59.15 ml) hot water heated to between 160 and 175 Fahrenheit
    • 4 scoops (264 g) vanilla ice cream

    Instructions

    • Add the matcha powder to a small bowl.
    • Heat the water to between 160°F and 175°F.
    • Add a few tablespoons of the hot water to the matcha and whisk until a smooth paste forms. Gradually whisk in the rest of the water until smooth and combined.
    • Scoop ice cream into a bowl.
    • Pour the hot matcha over the ice cream and dig in!

    Notes

Matcha powder: Matcha is finely ground green tea powder that gives this affogato its vibrant color and earthy flavor. I recommend using the best quality matcha you can afford.
Ice Cream: Use ice cream or gelato. I love vanilla ice cream for this affogato. You can also use chocolate or experiment with other ice cream flavors!

Whisk: I recommend using a bamboo matcha whisk to best prepare the matcha. You can buy one online.

Berries (optional): This affogato is delicious with just matcha and ice cream. You can also top it with fresh or roasted berries. To roast blueberries, toss 1/2 cup fresh blueberries, 3/4 teaspoon of maple syrup or honey, a pinch of salt and 1 tablespoon of lemon juice. Spread on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and roast at 400 F for 8-10 minutes. The berries should release some juices but still hold their shape.

Extra toppings: You can also top it with chopped pistachios, walnuts or hazelnuts, a dusting of matcha powder and/or cocoa powder. You can also use a vegetable peeler to shave a little white chocolate, semi-sweet, or dark chocolate on top.

Serving: Use a shallow bowl or a glass. Try not to use a glass that’s too tall so that it’s easy to dig into. Serve the hot matcha alongside the dish of ice cream. It’s fun to let everyone pour the matcha over their ice cream for the full experience!
Storage: Matcha affogatos are best enjoyed immediately after making them.
